Dr. Elster and Asthma, Allergies

My childhood memories are plagued with many frustrating incidences of stuffy noses, watery eyes, and emergency room visits for uncontrollable wheezing. I can remember learning early on not to leave home without plenty of kleenex and a note to my teachers explaining why I could not play sports like other kids for fear of an asthma attack.

When I was in college in Berkeley in 1990, my health took a drastic turn for the worse. What started out as an allergic reaction deteriorated into chronic, severe asthma. I visited my school's health center almost every week looking for answers but all they had to offer me were more inhalers that provided little relief. Several months later, when my situation had worsened to the point that I could not walk up a single flight of stairs without having to stop and catch my breath, I took a cab to the emergency room where I was placed on steroid anti-inflammatories intravenously for three days and oral steroids for several weeks.

While the drugs helped me to recover, I longed for other options, something that would prevent the problem as well as correct it. After trying drugs, surgeries, and many other therapies, I was ready to try something new. I learned about a specialty known as IUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic and how important a person's neck area is to his/her overall health. At my first visit, it was discovered that I had suffered a neck injury in my past (perhaps during birth since my symptoms had started at such a young age) that was causing my immune system to malfunction. The IUCCA Upper Cervical Specialist corrected my neck injury (during several months of upper cervical care) which stopped both the asthma and the allergies. While hiking to the top of a 14,000 foot peak outside of Breckenridge, Colorado during the summer of '96, I realized how far I progressed and that I owed it all to chiropractic. As an Upper Cervical Specialist, it is my goal to help to change the lives of others as mine has been changed! -- Erin L. Elster, D.C.
